The Aesthetic Pharmacists Group UK (APGUK) is a professional organisation that supports and represents pharmacists working within aesthetic medicine.
Our aims are:
1. To aid the safe, ethical and evidence based practice of non-surgical aesthetic medicine amongst pharmacists in the UK
by supporting, guiding and enhancing clinical standards amongst pharmacists within this speciality.
2. To work closely with patient and government bodies to represent the aesthetic pharmacist in the UK.
3. To ensure fair consultation and regulation of the aesthetic medical sector on behalf of aesthetic pharmacists.
We operate in accordance with the 'standards for pharmacy professionals' set by the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).
We endeavour to work closely with the Royal Pharmaceutical Society and the GPHC to ensure our pharmacists are informed and protected.
Pharmacist prescribers practising aesthetic medicine should do so in accordance with the prescribing competency framework set by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society. This framework can be used to underpin professional responsibility for prescribing.
Pharmacist Prescribers are governed by their Statutory Regulatory body the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPHC). Our professional support body, the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) is the professional membership society for pharmacists and pharmacy in Great Britain.
Both our professional regulatory and support bodies endorse Non-surgical aesthetic medicine as an appropriate speciality for a pharmacist prescriber who is appropriately trained.
The Medicines Act 2012 (Amendment No.2) (England, Wales and Scotland) allows a pharmacist registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) to act as an independent prescriber.
Pharmacist Independent Prescribers can prescribe any medicine (including off label, off license and unlicensed medicines) for their patients, on the same basis as doctors and provided that they take full accountability and responsibility for doing so, in accordance with guidance set out by the GPHC.
The Health Care Education England (HEE) report classed pharmacist prescribers as ‘level 7’ practitioners who are able to provide oversight.
Our medical aesthetic practice is supported and endorsed by the Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Agency (MHRA), the Department of Health (DOH), the NHS, the Joint Council for Cosmetic Practitioners (JCCP) and Saveface.
The European legislation on Non surgical medical procedures CEN BS EN 16844 also includes pharmacist prescribers in their list of appropriate practitioners to carry out non-surgical cosmetic procedures.
